  • Explain- Merit Level- C+/B-
  • Justify/Evaluate- Distinction/ Distinction* Level- A-/A*

1)

(a)  Explain what the term ‘DAB’ means and state one advantage to the consumer of using DAB.

  1. 'DAB' means Digital Audio Broadcasting. One advantage for the consumer is that the signals are compressed taking up less space meaning more signals can reach the radio allowing a wider variety of stations making it more accessible.

  2. (b)  Explain two reasons why listening to radio via apps is more popular than listening via digital television (DTV).
One reason why listening to radio via apps is more popular than listening via DTV is that apps are on  mobile phones which makes them portable allowing for listening on the go. Another reason is that you are able to access different bespoke genres of music due to the wide range of apps and choices.

2)

(a)  Explain what the acronym BARB stands for and what the organisation does.

'BARB' stands for Broadcaster's Audience Research Board. They collect data on the audience demographics and viewerships of different television channels.

(b)  Explain three interpretations that can be made about the differences in audience demographic between viewers of ITV1 and BBC2. Use examples and evidence from the data to support your answers.

One interpretation that can be made about the differences in audience demographic between viewers of ITV1 and BBC2 are that more women watch ITV as they mainly show soap operas such as Emmerdale and Coronation Street. Another interpretation that can be made is that more people from social grades A and B watch BBC2 the shows such as World Snooker Championships and Versailles require more attention and intelligence than the content on ITV1 so will most likely appeal to a higher social grade. Finally, another interpretation is that the shows on ITV1 appeal to a more mainstream audience due to the content being made up of shows such as Britains Got Talent and Emmerdale which are  more popular and appeal to more people than the shows on BBC2 which would generally appeal to a more niche audience.

3)

 (a) Explain why an independent company often works with other companies as part of a joint venture. Use examples to support your answer.

An independent  company often works with a bigger company as part of a joint venture to increase audience reach. Hat Trick Productions and Channel 4 worked together on Derry Girls. They do this as the larger company will have a bigger audience so this will likely increase the audience for the independent company.

Increase profit, increase audience, increase marketing ability.

(b) Explain two disadvantages of being an independent company. Use examples to support your answer.

One disadvantage of being an independent company is that, unlike conglomerates, they don't have other companies working with them to aide them in cross promotion making it harder for them to successfully market their products through media sectors. An example of this is sumo digital. They didn't have the ability to market their products so they worked with Microsoft. Another disadvantage is that they they don't have the budget to work with big A-list celebrities or the most highly skilled employees.

 4)

Identify four brands produced by one cross media conglomerate that you have studied.

Disney:

1) Marvel

2) ABC

3) Star Wars

4) Pixar Films

5)

Identify two post-production job roles and for each explain how they contributed to a specific media product you have studied.

Sound/Audio Editor- Makes sure that the sound track fits the visual footage for the animation, TV show or film. An example of this is Gwendolyn Yates Whittle who was one of  the supervising sound editor's for Marvels 'Wandavision'.
